Deputy Commissioner Sangrur intensifies efforts to bring positive change in lives of drug addicts

Sangrur, 25 May 2022 : In order to achieve the goals set by Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Bhagwant Mann to make the state completely drug free, the Sangrur district administration has intensified its efforts in a planned manner. Following the directions of the Chief Minister, Deputy Commissioner Mr. Jitendra Jorwal today visited the Drug De-addiction Center situated at village Ghabdan where he interacted with the drug addicts in detail. DC informed them that to make them healthy, skilled and to bring them into the mainstream of society, a library and gymnasium has been inaugurated here at the center. He also started Mobile and electrical repair courses for the patients who have completed their treatment with an aim to provide employment opportunities to them in future.
After the inaugural ceremony, Mr. Jorwal said that during the interaction with the drug addicts, the facts came to light that to ensure their speedy recovery, more recreational activities were needed to be introduced so that instead of being idle throughout the day, they should become more stronger physically and mentally. He said that by taking details about the educational qualifications, age, habits, temperament, background and interests of these patients, it became necessary to create a more conducive environment for them in the de-addiction center.
Mr. Jorwal said that after the routine activities, qualified and educated youth will now able to prepare for competitive examinations including Railway, Army and PPSC as books related to these subjects have also made available in the library. He said that a gymnasium has been set up for the patients so that they can take regular care of their health. He said that LED has also been installed at the center keeping in view the entertainment aspect. Mr. Jorwal appealed to the patients to become a motivator for others after their successful recovery.
The Deputy Commissioner said that a youth who had done Bachelor of Engineering, under treatment at the center, is now optimistic about his future. He wanted to make a positive change in himself before he could return home. Similarly, a youth of about 24 years who started taking drugs unknowingly even before the B.Sc. examinations, was also hopeful of better future.
Mr. Jorwal said that the district administration would leave no stone unturned in helping to realize the unfulfilled dreams of these patients. He also appealed the people to actively participate in this campaign of the government. He added that people must come forward to support the administration so that anti-social elements could be completely stopped from misleading other youth in the future. He said that in the 10 OOAT Clinics being run in the district, 9,162 registered persons were being provided medicines as well as mental counseling services by the expert counselors.
On this occasion Additional Deputy Commissioner Development Varjit Walia, SDM Charanjot Singh Walia, Civil Surgeon Dr. Parminder Kaur, XEN Panchayati Raj Tajinder Singh, Deputy Medical Commissioner Dr. Vikas Dhir and some other officials were also present.
