UPPER CASTE STUDENTS BOYCOTT MIDDAY MEAL COOKED BY DALIT WOMAN
Uttrakhand, 21 December 2021 : Students of Upper Hindu Caste boycotts the mid-day meal made by a dalit woman, named as Sunita Devi.
“On the first day (of her joining work), students of upper caste had the midday meal cooked by her without any fuss, but from the next day, they started boycotting the meals,” said Prem Singh, principal of Government Inter College, Sukhidhang, said on Monday. “What made them stop eating the midday meals is beyond my understanding. Of the total 57 students, today only 16 students belonging to the scheduled caste had a meal here. ” (sources : Hindustan Times )
The School total has a strength of 230 students. Out of total 66 students from class 6-8, around 40 students have stopped eating mid-day meal as Sunita devi started her work on December 13, Singh said. Instead of having food at school, students preferred to bring lunchbox from home.
Sunita Devi (known as BhojanMata), a woman belong to scheduled caste, was currently appointed as a cook for mid-day meals, at government secondary school in Jaul village of Champawat District, Uttrakhand.
Notably, Mid-Day meal is designed to ensure the better and adequate nutrition of school-age children nationwide.
