Bengaluru: India’s Top 5 IT companies are planning to add more than 96,000 employees, Nasscom said in a statement, reacting to reports that said 3 million IT jobs would be lost by 2022 due to automation.

“With the evolution of technology and increasing automation, the nature of traditional IT jobs and roles will evolve overall leading to creation of newer jobs,” the IT industry body said. “The Industry continues to be a net hirer of skilled talent, adding 138,000 people in FY21, and robust hiring plans for FY22…”

“The industry is upskilling more than 250,000 employees in digital skills and has hired more than 40,000 fresh digitally trained talent, indicating its commitment and investment towards rapid enhancement of workforce capabilities.”

According to Nasscom, the business process management (BPM) industry in India employs more than 1.4 million people (excluding domestic and in-house) and not nine million as the reports quoting a Bank of America study suggested. The IT-BPM sector overall employed 4.5 million people as of March 2021, it said.

Based on the commentary by India’s Top 5 IT services firms—Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys NSE 0.98 %, Infosys NSE 0.54 %, WiproNSE -1.59 %, HCL Technologies NSE -1.13 % and Tech Mahindra—the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the demand for skilled talent in areas like cloud computing, Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and 5G, among others. Companies plan to increase hiring due to a revival in business demand compared to last year.
