Peroshah village : A journey from menace to management
Batala, 10 August 2021 : Peroshah village in Shri Harigobindpur Block of Gurdaspur District turned a dirty pond into which the entire village’s drainage flowed and made it a valuable resource for irrigation and to serve them during times of water shortage. The village had a population of approximately 817 individuals residing in 147 households. Previously, wastewater that was accumulating in the village pond posed a major health threat. It emitted bad odour and was a breeding ground for mosquitoes resulting in spread of vector borne diseases such as Dengue, Malaria, etc.
Villagers take a leap of faith:
The residents in Peroshah village realized the need for proper disposal of wastewater for the well-being of the residents. The pathetic condition of the roads that spilled over with drainage water from the open drains and flowing into the pastureland was a nuisance. Fortunately, through guidance from the district administration and community engagement, they were able to manage liquid waste effectively.
Adding value:
In September 2019, the liquid waste management project came into being, set up at a cost of Rs. 27.89 lakhs through support from MGNREGA and Panchayat funds. The entire pond area took on a new look after the renovation, like a park. Not only was wastewater treated, but the storage capacity of the pond also increased to 65 lakh litres. The amount of water generated from the entire village per day is approximately 1.12 lakh litres.
The total area of the pond is 7 kanal and with the wastewater treated through the tanks using Thapar technology, it is now possible to irrigate 18 acres of land in a month. Earlier, 2 separate tube wells were required to do the same.
O&M and sustainability:
The surroundings of the pond are well structured, clean, and green. Benches put up at various points serve the residents who come in to sit during their leisure time. The clearness of the water in the pond and absence of smell are indications of the changes that have occurred.
To ensure sustainability of the project, MGNREGA and members of the Panchayat with the help of Panchayat funds have taken the responsibility to clean the well. When required, they appoint helpers under MGNREGA scheme.
Treated water- a boon for the community:
Post construction and with proper functioning of the Liquid Waste Management project in the village more residents are seen around the pond spending time with their families. Reduction of in bad odour and addition of greenery attracts children to use the area for recreational activities. The wastewater is now used for irrigation of quality crops.
Feedback:
Harjinder Kaur Kahlon, Sarpanch of Paroshah village said that Bikramjit Singh, Gurmeet Singh, Pal Singh, Sarwan Singh and Angrej Singh (all farmers) are using pond water for irrigation. She said that other villages should also come forward to set up such projects.
Village resident Sukhraj Singh Kahlon said that this project has changed the face of the village. Many people from the area are coming to their village to see this technology.
