Jawandha brothers of Barnala scripting new success story, grow 45 varieties of plants on 13 acres of land

Barnala, August 26, 2021: Jawandha family from village Badbar in district Barnala are scripting a new sucesss story in agriculture by growing 45 varieties of plants on their 13 acres of land.

Added to this brothers Harvinder Singh, Paramjit Singh and Harjinder Singh have to their credit growing organic food for the past five years, not burning farm residue or paddy stubble for the past two years and using water saving direct seeding method in paddy cultivation for the past 8 years. Apart from this the trio process and market their own produce under the label of Jawandha farms on Sangrur-Barnala road.

‘Our father always used to tell us to leave an acre of land for family use wherein we should grow vegetables, fruits and crops for family without any chemicals. However, we didn’t give a thought to it until the year 2016 when Harvinder’s son suffered from wheat allergy and later my daughter had intestinal problems,’ says Paramjit Singh.

When the kids’ health condition was discussed with PGI Chandigarh experts, excessive use of chemicals was found to be the main culprit behind this problem, he adds.

Thereafter, the brothers embarked on organic farming. After having used little chemical I 2016 to going completely organic by 2017, the Jawandha brothers have come a long way learning lessons of wellness through organic food.

These hardworking farmers process and sell their own produce at a kisan hut on Sangrur-Barnala road. “Marketing has never been a problem and we do not depend on commission agents to sell our produce. We tell our fellow farmers too to turn organic and assure them that we would market their products as,” adds Paramjit.

45 varieties of plants are grown
Jawandha brothers grow 45 varieties of plants on 13 acres of land. They have grow 30 to 35 kinds of medicinal plants and herbs that are further processed and sold in market. Besides this, they have a strong market presence in sale of dragon fruit that’s being sold at Rs 400 per kg. They sell the fruit as well as its saplings for farming purposes for which advanced booking is done. They also make their own vermi compost, process agriculture residue into fertilizer, manage pests and insects using organic techniques and have never bought vegetable for their home from market for past five years.

Have not burnt paddy stubble for past 2 years
The brothers have not burnt paddy stubble in their farms for the past two years and instead milch the paddy straw back into fields. They have also been using direct sowing method in paddy cultivation thereby saving water and cutting back on other expenses. They say that the entire farm residue is either composted or put to other use, but is never burnt to save farmer friendly organisms and for Beyer health of soil.

All farmers should emulate Jawandha brothers, Deputy Commissioner Barnala
Appreciating the efforts of Jawandha brothers, Deputy Commissioner Barnala Mr Tej Pratap Singh said that these farmers are perfect example for others to emulate. He said that Barnala was proud to have such young farmers foraying into chemical free farming. Recognizing the efforts of these farmer brothers, Minister Mr Sadhu Singh Dharamsot had honored them during Independence day celebrations held at the district administrative complex Barnala.
