Diwali or Dipawali is India’s one of the most popular and biggest festival.  The festival symbolizes the spiritual “victory of good over evil”, “light over darkness”, and “knowledge over ignorance”. Everyone loves to celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm and gusto. Unfortunately, the festival of light is also marked by the alarming level of pollution caused by bursting of fire crackers. It not only pollutes the environment also proven detrimental for human health.  The concept of Green Diwali has become popular to minimize the effect of fire crackers on health and environment. So, this Diwali lets pledge to make the festival pollution and noise free.

With an eye on environment, Here are some tips to commemorate Green Diwali :

1.   Use Eco-Friendly Candles and Lamps 

The major attraction of Diwali is diyas or lamps we used. We all know how plastic based lamps are polluting the environment. This Diwali switch to home based lamps or earthen lamps made by local potters that also help small scale producers.

2.   Use Natural Colours for Rangoli 

One best way to practice Green Diwali is the use of organic or natural colours in rangoli making. Being biodegradable in nature, these colours possess no health risk. You can extract these colours from flower, powder of spices like cloves, cinnamon, turmeric and so on.

3.   Give Thumbs Up to Green Crackers

Let’s keep the trend of bursting crackers alive by replacing the fire crackers with the eco-friendly ones. Green crackers are designed to have lesser impact on the environment and reducing health risks. Harmful chemicals like carbon, potassiumnitrate, barium are not used in the green crackers. So, these could be the more better option in comparison with traditional crackers.

4.   A Big No to Plastic Wrappers

This Diwali say no to plastic wrap or flowers to cover the gift item. Instead use bio-degradable bags, that are completely compostable. A handmade paper wrapping is the best option always. You can design the outer layout according to your choice. Avoid plastic covers or bags that cause much harm to the environment.

5.   Consider Donating

Diwali festival is not only about giving gifts to friends and family. Let’s wider our social circle and make other faces happy. One good idea is to visit an orphanage, distribute sweets and winter clothing to make the festival memorable for underprivileged.
