OFFICERS APPEAL THE PEOPLE NOT TO ENCOURAGE BEGGING BY GIVING ALMS BESIDES EDUCATING PARENTS

Jalandhar, 29 December 2021 : With an aim to wipe out the menace of beggary, the district administration today carried out an anti-begging drive in the city. A team comprising District Program Officer Gurminder Randhawa, DCPO Ajay Bharti, LPO Sandeep Kumar, Vishal Dutt along with members of childline Jalandhar kamlesh, Bindu, lovely, and Kiran Bala visited BMC Chowk, Guru Nanak Mission Chowk, Nakodar Chowk, and other prominent area, where they found two children along with their parents involved in begging. The team members motivated the parents of these children to not to engage them into baggery; but to put them in school for education.

Meanwhile, the team members met the persons involved in beggary and gave them an directions to stop this illegal practice as stern action would be taken against them failing to obey government’s guidelines.

The members also met with commuters at various intersections and appealed them to not to promote beggary especially child beggery by giving money to beggars. They said that the beggary has become a big problem in the city which needed to be eliminated at any cost. They said every effort would be made to ensure that the city was made free from the beggars.

The team was mandated to nab the people involved in begging and take action against them as per the provisions of law. Legal Probation Officer Sandeep Kumar told that as per law habitual beggars could be imprisoned for three years if anyone was found guilty of begging again and again.

Likewise,  any person forcing a child for begging could be sentenced to five years of imprisonment adding that Mr. Sandeep said a person harming any organ of a child could be put behind the bars for seven years along with heavy fine.

He said that team would regularly monitor the drive to be undertaken by the anti-begging squad of Police.

Meanwhile, DPO Gurminder Singh Randhawa appealed to the people to not encourage the begging by giving alms and said that after the awareness campaign, the enforcement would be started in the city.
