Jalandhar, 29 December 2021 : District Administration Jalandhar is all set for the ensuing assembly election in the district so as to facilitate over 16.50 lakh voters belonging to all nine assembly constituencies for the exercise of their right to franchise smoothly in a peaceful environment.

Divulging the details, Deputy Commissioner cum District Election Officer Ghanshyam Thori said that since the election mechanism was already set in motion, the district administration has completed all its preparedness with respect to conduct of free, fair and transparent polls in Jalandhar.

He stated that there were a total of 16,50,755 voters in the district as of now, who would exercise their franchise in the polls. Of these, as many as 8,58,263 and 7,92,462 voters are male and female respectively while 30 voters have registered themselves as third gender. He also added that the district has a total of 27,042 voters have been listed as first time voters (age group 18-19 years), 72 overseas voters, 11,692 persons with disabilities (PWD) voters, 4,56,610 above age of 80, and 1920 service voters.

The district has achieved the target of preparing photo voter list of all the electors with 100 percent inclusion of photos of all voters. Similarly, 100 percent availability of provisions of ramps, drinking water, adequate furniture, proper lighting has also been ensured by the administration besides helpers and wheelchairs at all booths during the polling day for the PWD voters.

The Deputy Commissioner further mentioned that the elaborate arrangements have been made for the assembly polls as a total of 24,237 employees from the civil and Police department has been assigned various duties. They said that 14277 polling personnall would be deployed across the district where as about 9960 police personals to be deployed to ensure peaceful elections in the district.

He said that a total number of 12696 employees have been deputed as Presiding Officers (PRO), Presiding Officer-I, II, & III besides 1219 micro observers, 181 each sector officers and zonal officers. Thori further mentioned that special monitoring teams ranging from assembly level to district level have been formed by the administration to keep a close tab over the poll expenditure of candidates and maintaining law & order situation, especially at sensitive polling booths.

Giving more details, the DC said that joint teams of Police and civil administration have completed the mapping of vulnerable polling station where tight security arrangements have been made during the entire poll process. Similarly, the officials of Jalandhar Commissionerate of Police and SSP rural have taken stern action against the unscrupulous elements including registration of FIRs, arrests and seizure of narcotics substances and liquors from their possession.

He stated that both teams have recovered and destroyed over 90,000 liters of illicit liquor in the wake of the elections while a special drive was underway to deposit licensed weapons in the district. Meanwhile, they called upon the election staff to perform their duty diligently so that people were able to cast their vote independently. He said that all election related mechanism would be functioning immediately after the model code of conduct was come into force.
