Jakhar to be the first Hindu CM of Punjab ?
Chandigarh, 18 September 2021 : With Congress high command throwing its weight behind him former Punjab Congress President Sunil Jakhar is likely to become the first Hindu Chief Minister of modren Punjab.
This move is likely to boost the prospects of Congress in 2022 polls as Congress has ousted his current Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh often described by his detractors within the party as epicurean monarch and inaccessible leader. But by bringing in Jakhar as Chief Minister of state Congress has played a master stroke. Jakhar enjoys a reputation of articulate and meticulous mass leader who is widely popular amongst all the sections of society.
His mass appeal and oratorical skills coupled with his leadership qualities has helped him to carve a niche for himself. He had taken the Akali-BJP alliance head on during his remarkable stint as leader of opposition by targeting them on various issues. Likewise, as MP he had cornered the incumbent Modi government on various issues during their last stint thereby making his presence felt at national political scene.
This has helped him in strengthening his personal image before Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. Sources revealed that Gandhi family had a meeting with Jakhar a few days back at Delhi during which he had been given a green signal for Chief Ministership in Punjab. Congress eyes Hindu vote bank along with the Dalit vote bank which can be mobilised easily by Jakhar’s elevation as CM. Congress also wants to shun the last four and half year misrule of Captain Amarinder Singh by giving Chief Ministership to Jakhar.
Meanwhile, it may be note that after independence Bhim Sen Sachar was the only Hindu CM of undivided Punjab. But after division of Punjab in 1960s barring Giani Zail Singh only Jatt Sikhs have assumed this coveted office. If Jakhar is elevated to this post then he will be first ever Hindu CM of Punjab.
