Tata Steel’s ₹2,600 Crore Investment in Punjab to Create 2,500 Jobs

(Rajinder Kumar) Chandigarh, 09 October 2025: The Punjab government and Tata Steel have jointly launched a major investment project worth ₹2,600 crore in Ludhiana, which will become a new foundation for the state’s economic and social progress. The groundbreaking ceremony for this project took place on October 20, 2023, with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann playing a key role. This project is Tata Steel’s first low-carbon green steel plant in India, which will produce steel using the environmentally friendly Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology. The plant is being set up at Kadiana Khurd, Ludhiana, with a capacity of 0.75 million tons per year.
This project has brought golden employment opportunities for Punjab’s youth. It will create approximately 500 direct jobs and 2,000 indirect employment opportunities. The state government has taken special steps to give priority to local youth and provide skill development training, so they can strengthen their careers by joining this project. This will be an important path for them to become self-reliant.
The Punjab government has provided solid support for this project. In August 2022, Chief Minister Mann formally allocated 115 acres of land to Tata Steel. Additionally, the state government announced road connectivity to the plant and arranged for all necessary government approvals to be simplified and given on time. These initiatives helped start and develop the project quickly.
Under the industrial policy, the government has also provided several financial incentives for this project. These include tax exemptions, investment-based assistance, and various other facilities. This has improved the investment climate in Punjab and encouraged large industries to come to the state. This is why major industries like Tata Steel chose Punjab for their first low-carbon green steel project.
This plant is being built with environmental protection in mind. Electric Arc Furnace technology produces much lower carbon emissions compared to traditional steelmaking. It will produce steel entirely from recycled steel scrap, which will save energy and reduce pollution. This project will strengthen the Punjab government’s green development goals and make the state a clean and sustainable industrial hub.
Punjab’s economy will greatly benefit from this project. This massive capital investment of ₹2,600 crore will benefit local traders, construction, transportation, and other sectors. This will increase new activities in the industrial sector, which will boost the state’s revenue and accelerate economic development. This project will establish Punjab as an industrial hub.
Along with this project, on March 12, 2024, Tata Steel also inaugurated a fully automated fabrication service center in Ludhiana. This center will provide customized Tiscon TMT rebar and bore pile cages to the construction industry, with a capacity of 1,500 tons per month. This center will not only increase production but also improve quality and efficiency in the construction sector.
In this way, this investment by the Punjab government is opening new paths for employment opportunities for youth and economic prosperity for the state. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Punjab has taken important steps toward green and sustainable development, balancing industrial promotion and environmental protection. This project is a guarantee of Punjab’s prosperous future and a bright tomorrow for its youth.
